While taking high catches using the 'big basket' method, the little finger of right hand (for right-handers) should be above and over and touching the little finger of left hand.

I was trying to teach my niece catching a ball. She is just 2 and a half year old. At first she couldn't catch the ball. Then I asked her to keep the little finger of right hand over the little finger of left hand and then I manually from a very close distance placed the ball into her hand. I then applied little pressure pushing the ball and what I observed was the hands automatically, instinctively closed grasping the ball. I then went few meters away and tossed the ball up in the air... she was soon able to catch the ball. Success !!!
